Overview:

Mesotherapy is a technique, invested in 1952 by Dr. Michel Pistor, where medication is injected into the mesoderm, the layer of fat and connective tissue under the skin. Over the past 50+ years, in excess of 25,000 physicians worldwide have use Mesotherapy regularly for a variety of purposes, including overall weight loss, spot weight reduction, cellulite reduction, hair loss, scar revision and wrinkle elimination.

  • The History of Mesotherapy
In 1987, the French Academy of Medicine recognized Mesotherapy as an inherent part of traditional medicine. The International Society of Mesotherapy encompasses 14 countries throughout Europe and South America.

Mesotherapy is a technique using very small doses of compounded medications that are administered in specific areas, depending on the condition being treated. The medicines and plant extracts used are typically obtained from compounding pharmacies in most countries, although Europe mass manufactures many products that are prohibited for import into most other countries.

All medicines used are FDA-approved for their use. In combination, medicines for Mesotherapy are used for off-label purposes. A recent illustration of this distinction is Botox. Although Botox was FDA approved for controlling muscle spasms, the medical community embraced it for its cosmetic properties of controlling wrinkles. For many years, plastic surgeons and dermatologists used Botox for off-label purposes.

  • What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure used to “melt away” fat, and reduce fat and cellulite. Fatty areas, like the abdomen, upper arms, and thighs are often the problem targets. Mesotherapy is an aesthetic medical specialty. It involves injecting microscopic quantities of a variety of pharmaceutical agents, natural plant extracts, homeopathic agents, and vitamins into the skin. The therapist may select a custom formula to treat your condition. Mesotherapy may be affectively used to treat cellulite, weight loss, body sculpting, and rejuvenation - anti-aging of the skin. Some consider Meso pain management, and that is evaluated on an individual basis.

  • How does Mesotherapy work to reduce Cellulite?
Mesotherapy reduces excess fat deposits. It also helps to improve lymphatic drainage, blood flow in the circulatory system, and disrupt fibrotic and the bands of connective tissue (which inevitably convey the appearance and classic dimpling of cellulite).

  • How many treatments are required before I see results?
All patients are different, and require special evaluation and it depends on the patient’s body. Some patients see results after one treatment session while other may require four to five treatments to begin to see results. Typically, the patient’s clothing will become looser and friends & family will tell the patient that they appear thinner.

  • What are the side effects?
A common side effect of Mesotherapy is bruising, which generally resolves over one week. To speed up the healing process, we recommend that the homeopathic supplement arnica be taken either orally or applied topically on a daily basis. Patients may experience temporary soreness. This will subside within 24-48 hours.

  • Are there any restrictions?
Restriction vary, depending on the condition being treated. We discuss these with each patient before treatments commence. In general, patients are advised not to wear makeup for at least 4 hours after facial treatments, not to take hot showers for at least 6 to 8 hours. We recommend that patients eat a high-protein meal, and avoid caffeine or other stimulants before treatment.

  • May one go back to work after a Mesotherapy treatment?
Yes. The procedure generally takes 20-30 minutes and requires no preparation or recovery time. Furthermore, no heavy bandages or dressings are used.

  • Are the treatments painful?
The majority of patients experience minimal discomfort with mesotherapy. For those with lower pain thresholds, a numbing cream or painkillers can be used.

  • How long do the benefits of Mesotherapy last?
Treatment areas will remain fat free as long as the patient maintains healthy living habits. The usual tenets of moderation in diet and a prudent mixture of aerobic and anaerobic exercise are exceedingly helpful. Treatments for cellulite may require some maintenance on a six month basis.

  • Is Mesotherapy different from liposuction?
Mesotherapy is extraordinarily different than liposuction. Mesotherapy differentiates itself by involving no anesthesia and no surgical risk (since it’s a non-surgical procedure), mesotherapy requires no recovery time. Mesotherapy also removes the fat from the adipose cells without completely destroying them. This assists mesotherapy in giving its natural appearance. If you gain weight after having mesotherapy, the fat will simply return to the treated area, unlike liposuction, where fat can start to occur in places that have been thin in the past, such as arms, neck, face, and calves.

  • What are the benefits of Mesotherapy over surgical techniques such as liposuction?
Liposuction does not treat cellulite and may take the cellulite more prominent. Mesotherapy treats cellulite directly and the results are smoother skin & skin surface. Mesotherapy reduces fat in specific areas, a common example are “love handles”. The adipose and fat deposits flush out of areas and the body does not gain weight back, which often happens after liposuction. Mesotherapy is a non-surgical procedure. It does not require a hospital admission, general anesthesia, or loss of productive post procedure time.

  • How does Mesotherapy work on age proofing & skin rejuvenation?
Vitamins and anti-oxidants injected into the meso-skin rejuvenate the cells and tissues making them metabolically active. Collagen and elastin production is stimulated. Mesotherapy vitamin treatments may be used to prevent future wrinkles from forming. Treatments on the face, neck, arms may be performed 2-4 times a year.

  • How does Mesotherapy work on weight loss & spot reduction?
Mesotherapy can identify specific targets or spots where the body stores excessive adipose & fat. Mesotherapy formulas injected in the meso-skin and disallow the cells from storing fat and help shrink the problem fat cells. Your body then flushes out the broken-down fat. Mesotherapy reduction can be used for double chins, love handles and any other area where you body pockets fat.

  • How does Mesotherapy work on cellulite/fat?
Cellulite treatment includes treating several factors. The therapist will create a Mesotherapy formula for your stage of cellulite. Components of the solutions dissolve the fat (lipolysis) and the cellulite and induce cellulysis of the damaged connective tissue. The aesthetic results include smoothing and contouring of the skin’s surface.

  • How does mesotherapy work on skin rejuvenation and wrinkle prevention?
Mesotherapy utilizes fat injection formulas under the skin to facilitate the cells more active metabolically, instigate collagen production, stimulate elastin production and induce a skin rejuvenation process. Wrinkle prevention can start in the twenties with Mesotherapy vitamin solutions to prevent wrinkles from ever forming in the first place.

  • Who can have Mesotherapy?
Healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 80 may have Mesotherapy for body sculpting and weight loss, cellulite treatment, and skin rejuvenation. Exclusion criteria are in place and preclude those patients confronted with moderately sever heart disease, diabetes, or those on blood thinners or arrhythmia medications, immune-compromised and/or organ transplant recipients, and, of course, pregnancy. Cancer patients in remission must be carefully evaluated in conjunction with their personal oncologist’s recommendations. With occasional exception, most likely this group is excluded from treatment. Hypertension must be controlled on medication. Every patient should undergo a thorough examination to evaluate their ability to use Mesotherapy safely.
